Artist & Mixers Informal check in post!

Greeting and salutations! It's your artist!Mod [personal profile] chimneythunder  here, checking in with all you lovely artists and mixers! Obviously, without having any of the actual fic drafts up yet, it’s kinda hard for any of you to have made a start (unless any of you are in current possession of either a TARDIS or Delorian, in which case, are you offering rides and can I come with?) but hopefully you’re all gearing yourselves up in preparation.
We’ll have up a post in the very near future for a reminder on how the claiming process works but for now, to get us all in the mood, I thought I’d pose some questions for you mixers and artists!

Do you go into it knowing that there is a specific type of fic you’d like to provide a mix or art for (e.g. specific pairings, genres or settings) or do you prefer to read all the drafts and see what grabs you?
When it comes down to the actual creating, what process do you like to follow?
What do you like most about creating art or a mix for a fic?

I prefer Frerard, but also look for the type of story (love scifi!). I read all the drafts that contain pairings I recognize.
While reading the story, I look for any song references that might hint at what to use. After, I go through my library and put in everything that sounds vaguely relevant. If it's long enough, I remove the ones that didn't really match up, and listen to the playlist. Then, I start ordering it to match the story or moods, removing any that don't slip in well.
I love the sneak-peak of the story, as well as trying to customize a soundtrack that will (hopefully) be as good as the fic!

Hmm, well, I do go for pairings I like, and then it's more a question of avoiding squicks and genres I don't like, rather than seeking out favourite ones. Like, I wouldn't want to work with a story that doesn't have a happy ending, or one that features dark themes. I usually just pick out a top 5 and go from there.
When it comes down to the actual creating, what process do you like to follow? I read the entire thing, then try to establish with the author if there are any specific scenes they'd like illustrated, and then match it to scenes I found interesting, in order to find a happy medium. Then I sketch, show it to the author if they want to see, and if we're both happy, it's onwards to inking and colouring! I tend to do around 4 pieces for a long fic, and sometimes a front cover, if I'm inspired.
What do you like most about creating art or a mix for a fic?
I just really love to collaborate with the author and make them happy with drawings for their fic, I think is the gist of it. I like being a part of this whole she-bang, and to play part in giving people a both linguistic and visual experience. But yeah, the partnership with the author is the main reason!

Do you go into it knowing that there is a specific type of fic you’d like to provide a mix or art for (e.g. specific pairings, genres or settings) or do you prefer to read all the drafts and see what grabs you? I pick a fic by pairing(s)/character(s), then trope and/or kink. As long as the fic doesn't have anything that squicks me hardcore, I'll determine what to choose by what I've already mentioned.

When it comes down to the actual creating, what process do you like to follow? I like reading the draft to get a feel more than anything. For art, I'll start thinking of what scenes I'd like to highlight and then start searching for pics and start tussling with GIMP. For mixes, it's more of question of do I want to tell the story via a playlist or do I want to emphasize the emotional arc? Once I make a decision, I create a huge playlist (average of about 100 songs) and start editing it until everything flows just so.

What do you like most about creating art or a mix for a fic? In addition of getting a preview of coming attractions, I really like the idea that my art and/or mix will enhance the experience of reading the story. Part of my enjoyment also comes from collaborating with authors. :)

Do you go into it knowing that there is a specific type of fic you’d like to provide a mix or art for (e.g. specific pairings, genres or settings) or do you prefer to read all the drafts and see what grabs you? I tend to go for pete/patrick fics because, like, otp. But it's also important that I like the premise? I like to look at everything involved but premise and pairings (specifically pete/patrick but I also really enjoy pretty much every panic pairing and fics with lots of pairings.)

When it comes down to the actual creating, what process do you like to follow? I really love reading the draft and going through the stand out, important scenes and the scenes that I enjoy most and then start scrolling through my itunes and spotify and music folders and finding artists I KNOW have a song for that scene before starting to think about the less obvious ones and compiling them all and then starting to order them and cut off that ones that don't really work.

What do you like most about creating art or a mix for a fic? I love trying to make a mix that does a fic justice! The best fics are ones you get emotionally attached to and I love that people can have more of it? Songs etc that make them immediately think of the fic?
