2019 Rules (the fine print edition)
The Background
First things first: this newer version of the Bandom Big Bang was started in 2015. It's a combination of a big bang and a reverse bang. There have been several of these kinds of bangs in different fandoms, including the dS/C6D Big Bang and Ante-Up Losers.
The main reason for this major change is to be more inclusive. After all, Bandom has some really great fanmixers, podficcers, vidders and artists. We believe that BBB is a superb opportunity for everyone to be as creative as they want to be.
Because of the smaller number of participants, we've condense the challenge down to one longer wave. The wave will have two components - the primary and the complement. The primary component will be the main fanwork, while the complement will be based on the primary.
So, for example, Person A draws the members of MCR going to clown school. Then, Person B writes a fic that goes along with the art, fleshing out all the trouble MCR gets into at clown school. Or maybe they feel inspired to make a soundtrack to go along with the art which evokes all the ridiculousness of MCR going to clown school (including appropriate calliope-influenced tunes). It is also completely possible that they create a vid using Mama and incorporating Pennywise the Clown imagery (but for the love of all that's holy, please DON'T).
The complement is meant to be inspired by the primary work, and sometimes that's easy. If Person A draws art about MCR as clowns, Person B writing a story about MCR as clowns is an obvious riff off the art. But things like mixes and podfics aren't always so directly correlatable, so we aren't going to set up any hard and fast rules for what is considered "inspired by." Hooray for creativity!
Each type of fanwork will have minimum requirements; we've tried to make it as close to equivalent as possible, but your mileage may vary. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have questions or concerns.

The Bands
The list of bands is based on:
- a survey of the bands written about in fics submitted for the previous years of Bandom Big Bang;
- bands that might be new to the scene but have strong connections to other listed bands and a growing presence in fandom.
Please note: we are not defining what qualifies as bandom. We are defining what this challenge encompasses, so that we can try to ensure that all summaries will get claimed for complements.
Therefore, without further ado: the core focus of your fic must be someone who currently is or was at any point in one of the bandom bands listed below:
My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At The Disco, The Academy Is..., Cobra Starship, The Like, Mindless Self Indulgence, The Used, Gym Class Heroes, Empires, Death Spells, Paramore, 21 Pilots, All Time Low, Against Me! or the video universes, spouses, significant others, or close associates of any of these bands.
That means that the focus of your fanworks (i.e., your POV character and/or 50% of your pairing) should come from one of these bands, their videos, their significant others, or their close associates (i.e., tour managers, BFFs, buddies that star in their music videos, etc.). In addition, as this is an RPF fandom, we will not permit original characters as the focus of a fanwork or in the primary pairing. So Gabe/Ke$ha would be allowed, but Gabe/OFC would not be allowed. In the case of a gen fanwork, a fic about a Killjoys!OC would not be allowed but a fic about Show Pony would.
If you are still confused or have questions about what bands qualify for the challenge, please e-mail the mods.
Warnings
![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
The list of mandatory warnings includes but is not limited to: rape/non-con, dub-con, incest, character death, suicide, self-harm, graphic violence, sexual content with underage characters (defined for this challenge as characters under 18 years of age), eating disorders, addiction, abuse (including child and domestic).
The mods reserve the right to require more warnings should the need arise. Also, please do not feel limited by this selection of warnings; more detailed and nuanced warnings will always be appreciated by your mods and your potential readers.
(Of course, you may choose to do without warnings in your own space, such as on a journaling site or AO3. We merely require warnings in all community spaces.)
Information for all Fanwork Creators
- We cannot guarantee what kind of fanwork complement creators will make, so if you are not comfortable with certain types of fanworks, please seriously consider whether you should participate in this challenge as a primary creator.
- We cannot guarantee what direction a complement creator's fanwork will take. If you are protective of your theme or story arc or have very specific thoughts on what the complement creator should create for your primary fanwork, please seriously consider whether you should participate in this challenge.
- Primary and complement fanworks must be in different mediums.
- Primary and complement creators will be given each other's email addresses.
- Complement creators will be given a copy of the primary rough draft. If the primary and complement creators want to collaborate, they are more than welcome to. At the bare minimum, they should be in contact to work out posting details.
Information for Writers
- At rough draft time, stories must have a minimum word count of 16,000. Your rough draft must have a complete beginning, middle, and end, with at least an outline or sketch of all the intermittent scenes.
- Complement fanworks should be "inspired by" the primary work, but we leave the interpretation of "inspired by" to the complement creators.
- Your final draft should be reviewed by at least one beta.
- All rough and final drafts must have the required warnings. We will be checking, and any reports from complement creators of missing warnings will be taken seriously.
- Stories must be created for this challenge. If you have a question about a fic that has already been partially not!ficced or comment ficced, please e-mail bandombigbang@gmail.com with details so we may discuss it with you.
- Rough drafts must be turned in with a summary for the complement claim posts. This is not necessarily the summary that will be posted with your fic; rather, it is your only chance to entice complement creators to claim your fic. Therefore, summaries for claiming should be longer and more detailed than posting summaries--for example, they often give away plot elements. Short, uninformative summaries are often picked last or not at all. For ideas, please see previous claims posts.
- Closer to the final draft due date, we will put up a call for posting date blackouts. If you have an issue with certain posting dates, that will be the time to leave a comment or e-mail us about it.
Information for Artists
- At rough draft time, art must be 80% complete. Some sort of story arc is helpful, but not required. Complement fanworks should be "inspired by" the primary work, but we leave the interpretation of "inspired by" to the complement creators.
- Art is a broad and varied category, but we want to be able to see your work! If you don't use a digital medium, please post high quality photographs or scans. Previous works have included crafts, drawings, paintings, digital art, and sculpture, but don't let that limit you!
- Art must be at least one piece. A series of related pieces (possibly using different mediums) is perfectly acceptable.
- All rough and final drafts must have the required warnings. We will be checking, and any reports from complement creators of missing warnings will be taken seriously.
Information for Mixers
- At rough draft time, your mix must be 80% complete. Some sort of story arc is helpful, but not required. Complement fanworks should be "inspired by" the primary work, but we leave the interpretation of "inspired by" to the complement creators.
- All rough and final drafts must have the required warnings. We will be checking, and any reports from complement creators of missing warnings will be taken seriously.
- Mixes must be turned in with a tracklist and a write up. Your write up will be a brief explanation of why you chose the songs you did - highlighting important lyrics or musical bits. It can be as short or as long as you wish it to be. The track list and write up should be attached to your email.
- Cover art is not required (though it's a nice bonus). If you can't create one, let the mods know and they can point the way to people who would be glad to help you with a cover.
- Mixes must be uploaded either as a .zip or .rar file. If you want to also upload individual tracks, that's fine, but there must be a compressed archive.
- Mixes should be uploaded to a site that will host the mix for the duration of the challenge. Acceptable sites include mediafire.com, dropbox.com, sendspace.com, box.com, and others, but feel free to use another public or private site. Additionally, you may choose to upload your mix and make it available as a stream at sites like spotify, 8tracks, or youtube.
- Your mix should be diverse--we want to encourage musical exploration!
Information for Podficcers
- At rough draft time, your podfic must be 80% complete. Complement fanworks should be "inspired by" the primary work, but we leave the interpretation of "inspired by" to the complement creators.
- Podfics must be created specifically for this challenge and you must have the author's permission to podfic unless they have blanket permission.
- All rough and final drafts must have the required warnings. We will be checking, and any reports from complement creators of missing warnings will be taken seriously. We also recommend podficcers consider additional warnings for audio triggers (e.g., sudden loud or high pitched noises).
- Cover art is not required (though it's a nice bonus). If you can't create one, let the mods know and they can point the way to people who would be glad to help you with a cover.
- If a podfic is uploaded in more than one file (e.g., 3 mp3s), it must be in a .zip or .rar file.
- Podfics should be uploaded to a site that will host the file for the duration of the challenge. Acceptable sites include mediafire.com, dropbox.com, box.com, sendspace.com, and others, but feel free to use another public or private site. You may also choose to stream your podfic. If you need help or hosting space, please contact the mods.
Information for Vidders
- At rough draft time, your vid must be 80% complete. Complement fanworks should be "inspired by" the primary work, but we leave the interpretation of "inspired by" to the complement creators.
- All rough and final drafts must have the required warnings. We will be checking, and any reports from complement creators of missing warnings will be taken seriously. We also recommend vidders consider additional warnings for audio or visual triggers (e.g., sudden loud or high pitched noises, flashing lights, shaky camera movement).
- Videos should be uploaded to a site that will host the file for the duration of the challenge. Acceptable sites include Youtube.com, Vimeo.com, mediafire.com, dropbox.com, box.com, sendspace.com, and others, but feel free to use another public or private site. You may also choose to stream your video. If you need hosting space, please contact the mods.
Frequently Asked Questions
But wait, I don't have a Dreamwidth account!
No problem, friend! Dreamwidth supports OpenID. Check out What is an OpenID account? and How do I comment using OpenID? for more information on leaving comments for signups and claims. Or you can comment anonymously and sign with your user name. However, to post to the community you must either have a DW account or email the mods your post and we will gladly post for you.
Okay, but how do I keep up with the challenge?
We are not cross-posting anything to LiveJournal. There is a RSS feed that you can follow from LJ. Just friend the account

HELP HELP, $DueDate IS THE SAME DAY AS MY WEDDING/MY DAY IN COURT/THREE FINAL EXAMS/FAMILY ROAD TRIP
You can turn things in early! Otherwise, e-mail us at bandombigbang@gmail.com as soon as you know that you have a conflict so we can talk to you.
Can I participate in more than one area of the challenge?
Certainly! However, you may not claim your own fanwork as a complement. Also, we are limiting people to two sign-ups. That means you can sign up twice as primary or complementary creator, or sign up once as each. For the sake of the mods’ stress levels, please sign up in separate comments for every fanwork you plan to submit.
Can I create with a co-creator?
Absolutely. The minimum is still the same for each fanwork submitted.
Can I write a sequel to a previously posted Big Bang?
Yes! As long as it is one that you wrote and the sequel is not posted elsewhere. (That is, please do not write a sequel to somebody else's story.)
Can I write a sequel to a non-challenge fic?
Sequels/prequels/companion fics to a non-challenge fic is acceptable under the following conditions:
- the original/inspirational fic is your own
- the original/inspirational fic is bandom-centric
- the fic submitted for Bandom Big Bang 2018 stands on its own (no cliffhangers, "to be continued," or "the thrilling conclusion of this trilogy will be posted later"!)
- there is a link to the original/inspiration fic in the header of your final draft post.
Do I get confirmation that I have been accepted into the challenge?
Yes. We will send an email that requires you to respond so we can confirm your email address.
Can I post my own graphics with my story? / My friend made me some art/a mix/a podfic to go with my story! Can I post that with my fic to the comm?
Please don't. We want to make sure our Bandom Big Bang participants receive their moment in the spotlight. Please don't include links to non-challenge extras in posts made to the community. We also request that you wait at least a week before posting non-challenge extras to your own journal/AO3/Tumblr.
I claimed a primary fanwork but haven't gotten my e-mail yet! How long will it take before I get my draft and get to work?
We're working on it. Claiming time is a very intense and fast process but we want to work carefully and make sure everyone gets the draft they signed up for! We will comment to confirm your claim (or, sadly, ask you to pick another) or if there is a problem with your e-mail address. Otherwise, please wait at least 24 hours before e-mailing us to ask about your claimed draft.
WHERE IS MY POSTING DATE???
Deep breaths! There are dozens of creators and we don’t want to confuse everyone. We are also trying to ensure that primary creators are scheduled to post at a time when they are actually capable of posting. In general, posting e-mails go out in order of posting dates. Please add bandombigbang@gmail.com to your spam white list and watch the community for updates. We will tell you when posting dates have all been sent out. Then and only then, you may e-mail us if your posting e-mail is still missing.
Can I post my fanwork friends-locked?
No. All Bandom Big Bang fanworks must be accessible to the general public. Headers must be posted at the
![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
Can I host my Bandom Big Bang off DW?
Yes, you may! So long as the fanwork is not behind some sort of wall. Headers must be posted at the

Who posts what where?
- When both you and your complement creator have turned in your final drafts, you will be assigned a posting date on a first turned in, first assigned basis.
- On the posting date, you will post your fanworks at your chosen location - your Dreamwidth or Livejournal, AO3, dA, Tumblr, fanfiction.net, etc. Please make sure that your post is not friends' locked or something similar. It must be publically available.
- You will also add a header post to the
bandombigbang community, which will link to your fanwork, with the details (summary, warnings, etc). You will also link to the complementary fanwork. If you don't have a Dreamwidth account, no worries. Just let the mods know and we will work it out.
My question isn't answered here. How do I contact you IMMEDIATELY??
First of all, please make sure bandombigbang@gmail.com is on your spam whitelist before the challenge begins! This will help make things run more smoothly. :) If you are waiting on an e-mail from us, please double check your spam folder before contacting us. If you still need to contact us, we will only reply to e-mails sent to bandombigbang@gmail.com. Please do not contact mods at their personal journals, tumblrs, or twitters for official business.
Remember, mods are people too. Though we've made every effort to ensure the e-mail account is being monitored at all times, life happens. Also note that abusive e-mails and messages will only get you gleefully banned from future Bandom Big Bang challenges. :)
$DisastrousLifeEvent or $Creator'sBlock has occurred and I need to drop out :(
We're very sorry to hear that! We understand, though. C'est la vie and all that. We won't be mad, but please e-mail us ASAP. Pinch hitters are difficult to find and it takes time to create! We truly promise that all we want is for participants to communicate with us.
- If you have not yet submitted a draft: don't. Creators that do not submit drafts are, by default, drop outs (but they are free to participate in other/later challenges).
- If you submitted a draft and your fanwork is as yet UNCLAIMED and you must drop out: no harm, no foul. E-mail us and we will remove your summary from the claims post.
- If you submitted a draft and your fanwork is CLAIMED: assuming the complement creator has finished or wants to finish, their work will be posted by the mods during the posting period without your primary fanwork.
- If you are on our list of people that have left previous mod teams in the lurch, you will not be eligible to claim a summary until double claiming opens.

After claims, it depends. Do you do it not long after claims or the day before everything is due? Do you tell the mods or just disappear? For the most part, if you give us enough notice, we can work things out. But communication is the key...
