Overview of the BBB
Apr. 8th, 2019 08:27 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
So, what's this all about?
The original concept of a Bandom Big Bang as it originated on the journaling sites was to encourage the creation of long fics by rewarding the authors with a soundtrack for their story. Over time, the challenge has evolved to include visual art, and eventually, all types of fanworks. Fandom is varied, and we want to see the entire range of creativity that's out there. (You can find a detailed history here of the BBB)
Basically, the BBB accepts the following types of fanworks: fics, visual arts, crafts, vids, mixes. and podfics. You choose whether you want to create a larger work (primary) or a smaller one (complement).
Complement creators choose a primary fanwork during the claims period, and then create a fanwork "inspired by" the primary work. There aren't any hard and fast rules as to what "inspired by" means, so the creators get to decide what that means to them.
The only restriction is that the formats of the primary and complement fanworks are different.
In the past, we usually scheduled things so that primary creators had 3 months and complement creators had 2 months to complete their fanworks, but for the last few years, most people have enjoyed a month's extension, so the time spans are now 4 months and 3.
Examples
There are plenty of examples of fics as primary fanworks available at both the Dreamwidth community and the AO3 collection. But here are some examples of all the different possibilities:

Things to note
- Your fanwork can include a ship, or not. It's totally up to you.
- You don't have to have a Dreamwidth account to participate. An AO3 account is useful, but all we really require is an email address that you check at least once a week.
- There is a Discord server if that's something you're interested in.
- This challenge is a good way to meet new people in the fandom.
- Tell all your friends about BBB; we always need more participants, even if the participation is simply reading and kudos/commenting on finished fanworks.
- Check out the full rules if you are thinking about participating.
- The mods are not scary people. We don't bite or yell. Please feel free to email (bandombigbang @ gmail) if you have questions before signing up, or have issues of any sort during the challenge.
