This year, we only have a handful of submissions for the BBB (mostly due to mod inattention, but also because of the changing landscape of fandom). But as long as people continue to create for the challenge, we will do our best to keep it going.

With the lower number of submissions, that means that double and triple claiming of summaries is a very real possibility. So if the fanwork you had your eye on gets claimed before you have a chance to claim it for yourself, be patient.

Double claiming won't happen until all the summaries have been claimed once. Triple claiming doesn't happen until all the summaries have been double claimed. &etc.

Stay tuned, keep an eye on this post or the Twitter account for news about claiming status.

  • Read the rules.
  • If you haven't signed up to be a complement creator, please do so here.
  • Claiming is first come, first served. No take backs!
  • Cut and paste the following into a comment:

  • Once all primary fanworks are claimed, we will open claims for a second round of claims.
  • Mods will reply confirming your claim or asking you to choose again.
  • Remember that complements can not be of the same format as the primary. So if the primary is a fic, you cannot write a fic - you must create something in a different format.
  • Drafts will be sent out over the next several days via e-mail. Please wait 72 hours before contacting us because you are missing a draft. It takes time to coordinate this!
  • Finished fanworks are due November 12, 2019.
  • You are welcome to claim a second summary once you have completed your original assignment and it has been accepted by the mods.
  • GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN.

So, normally the mods try really hard to stay engaged with the community here, to keep people on track and remind them when things are due, and to help find betas/cheerleaders/first readers/etc.

Most years we're pretty good about that.

This was not one of those years, and for that, we owe everyone here a big apology. So: we're sorry. No excuses, but just a promise to try to do better in the future.

Having said that, tomorrow is supposed to be the deadline. Given that the deadline snuck up on us, we're going to push it back by exactly one week. The new deadline is Monday, August 19th.

We will get the "how to submit your draft" post up next, and email everyone who's signed up to let them know about the extended deadline.

If you have questions or concerns, please email the mods at bandombigbang @ gmail. Thanks for your forbearance and patience.

Thanks to everyone who helped make last year's Big Bang a success. *showers everyone in confetti*

Please take the time to experience some of the great fanworks that have come out of this challenge, and try to leave a comment or kudos if you enjoyed the creator's work. We know that everyone worked really hard to complete their fanworks, and we're very proud of them.

So, what's this all about?

The original concept of a Bandom Big Bang as it originated on the journaling sites was to encourage the creation of long fics by rewarding the authors with a soundtrack for their story. Over time, the challenge has evolved to include visual art, and eventually, all types of fanworks. Fandom is varied, and we want to see the entire range of creativity that's out there. (You can find a detailed history here of the BBB)

Basically, the BBB accepts the following types of fanworks: fics, visual arts, crafts, vids, mixes. and podfics. You choose whether you want to create a larger work (primary) or a smaller one (complement).

Complement creators choose a primary fanwork during the claims period, and then create a fanwork "inspired by" the primary work. There aren't any hard and fast rules as to what "inspired by" means, so the creators get to decide what that means to them.

The only restriction is that the formats of the primary and complement fanworks are different.

In the past, we usually scheduled things so that primary creators had 3 months and complement creators had 2 months to complete their fanworks, but for the last few years, most people have enjoyed a month's extension, so the time spans are now 4 months and 3.

Examples

There are plenty of examples of fics as primary fanworks available at both the Dreamwidth community and the AO3 collection. But here are some examples of all the different possibilities:

Under here )

Things to note

  • Your fanwork can include a ship, or not. It's totally up to you.
  • You don't have to have a Dreamwidth account to participate. An AO3 account is useful, but all we really require is an email address that you check at least once a week.
  • There is a Discord server if that's something you're interested in.
  • This challenge is a good way to meet new people in the fandom.
  • Tell all your friends about BBB; we always need more participants, even if the participation is simply reading and kudos/commenting on finished fanworks.
  • Check out the full rules if you are thinking about participating.
  • The mods are not scary people. We don't bite or yell. Please feel free to email (bandombigbang @ gmail) if you have questions before signing up, or have issues of any sort during the challenge.

Title: Ohio Is For Pete and Patrick
Format: fic
Bands: Fall Out Boy
Pairings: Pete Wentz/Patrick Stump
Size: 22050 words
Rating: mature
Warnings: miscarriage risk, teen pregnancy, mpreg
Summary:
It's autumn 2002, and for just over a year, Fall Out Boy have been working on making it very clear that Pete and Patrick aren't together. They just aren't. It's what they do. They're PeteAndPatrick, music-making dream team, best friends, confidants, lovers, but they're not together- they're not a couple. The thing is, they have fully accepted their non-couple status, they're completely comfortable with it, and it seems as if nothing can change that. This is, of course, until something does just that. Patrick is pregnant, Pete is self-obsessed, Joe is pissed off, and Andy- poor Andy just wants someone else to take the night shift driving between venues once or twice.

Format: Fic
Bands: My Chemical Romance
Pairings: Gerard Way/Ray Toro, past Ray Toro/Christa Toro
Size: 27k words
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Discussion of homophobia, kidnapping, past character death
Summary:
Since losing his wife, Ray has done everything he could to raise his daughter Grace on his own. His brother-in-law Gideon, however, somehow always finds ways to complain about Ray and his parenting abilities. Despite this, Ray is determined not to let Gideon get the best of him.

A chance meeting with author Gerard Way may change things, however, as the two soon begin to develop an attachment to each other, though neither does anything about it. Gerard is too preoccupied with making a grand statement about it, and Ray is too afraid of how it might affect Grace if Gideon were ever to find out. One misplaced paper, however, may be the unraveling of an important and well kept secret; one which could bring Ray’s entire life crashing down around him.

Title: The Rules of Running Away
Format: fic
Bands: Fall Out Boy
Pairings: none
Size: ~34k
Rating: Teen
Warnings: n/a

Summary:
Patrick never asked for his parents to get divorced. He never asked his Mom to uproot his life and move him across the country.

It’s not his fault- as his parents keep insisting, he’s completely blameless in all this. So, Patrick doesn't understand why he has to deal with all the consequences.

Fuelled by homesickness, and an irrational hatred for Seattle and its tourist attractions, Patrick leaves his new house and runs away- homeward bound for his perfectly good old house.

The road is long, the journey spans months, and it doesn’t take long for Patrick to find company: Joe, another runaway, and a whole year younger than Patrick. Andy, a quiet man with no apparent destination. And Pete, who takes it upon himself to lecture the teenagers on his rules for successfully running away- and, for not getting arrested.

Summary:

His whole life, Patrick Stump dreamed of being up among the stars. Now he's commanding a 6-month mission aboard the International Space Station, crewed by Dr. Trohman, a strung-out botanist; Lieutenant Colonel Hurley, a meathead marine; and Captain Pete Wentz, an insubordinate pilot who's bent on taking heaven out of the stars and giving Patrick hell instead. Can they survive the brutal inhospitality of the vacuum of space, where the smallest equipment failure can mean instant death? And more importantly, can they survive each other?

Size: 31,000 words

Rating: Mature

Warnings: n/a

Summary:
Patrick spends the Believers Never Die Part Deux tour secretly monitoring his growing crush on Joe. He has an equation that he uses to keep track of it--it’s complicated, but it involves boner-thoughts, hand-holding-thoughts, addition, subtraction, and division, which has to be at least 3/4ths of the elements needed for a serious mathematical calculation. He furtively plots the results in a spreadsheet, doesn’t really think about it the rest of the time, and everything is very normal and totally fine.

Obviously.

Then Joe announces his plan to try online dating, and that goes straight to hell.
